About the Beaver
The Wet Beaver was a mythical creature believed to have lived on the lands now within the jurisdiction of Big Wood County. She enjoyed getting wet and had quite the appetite for big wood. It is believed that her teeth marks are still visible today on Big Richard, an abnormally big tree located at the geographic center of the County. Due to her notoriety, she has been featured in numerous childrens’ books such as Wet Beavers Loooking for Wood and Do you want to play with my beaver? (Paradiset, 2015)

About Big Richard
“Big Richard” is the nickname early settlers gave to an abnormally big tree located at the geographic center of present day Big Wood County. Big Richard and the ancient Indigenous burial grounds next to it were given heritage designation in 1963 following rumors that jealous mayors from neighboring counties were conspiring to purchase the lands and raze it, which would have sterilized the wildlife in the area and wipe out future generations.
